The States of classical statistical mechanics
MECANIQUE STATISTIQUE
Abstract : a state of an infinite system in classical statistical mechanics is usually described by its correlation functions. We discuss here other description in particular as 1) a state on a B*-algebras, 2) a collection of density distributions, 3) a field theory 4) a mesure on a space of configurations of infitely many particles. We consier the relations between these various descriptions and prove under very general conditions an integral representation of a state as superposition of extremal invariant states corresponding to pure thermodynamical phases.

Such theories are now known to emerge from limits of M theory and string theory, and to describe quantum Hall states. In the last few years they have been studied intensively, and many qualitatively new phenomena have been discovered, both on the classical and quantum level.

Abstract : Rydberg states of atoms and molecules are studied within the qualitative approach-based primarily on topological and group theoretical analysis. The correspondence between classical and quantum mechanics is explored to apply the results of qualitative (topological) approach to classical mechanics developed by PoincarĂ©, Lyapounov and Smale to quantum problems. The study of the action of the symmetry group of the problems considered on the classical phase space enables us to predict qualitative features of the energy level patterns for quantum Rydberg operators.

Abstract : We say that a representation of an algebra of local observables has short-range correlations if any observable which can be measured outside all bounded sets is a multiple of the identity, and that a state has finite range correlations if the corresponding cyclic representation does. We characterize states with short-range correlations by a cluster property. For classical lattice systems and continuous systems with hard cores, we give a definition of equilibrium state for a specific interaction, based on a local version of the grand canonical prescription; an equilibrium state need not be translation invariant. We show that every equilibrium state has a unique decomposition into equilibrium states with short-range correlations. We use the properties of equilibrium states to prove some negative results about the existence of metastable states. We show that the correlation functions for an equilibrium state satisfy the Kirkwood-Salsburg equations; thus, at low activity, there is only one equilibrium state for a given interaction, temperature, and chemical potential. Finally, we argue heuristically that equilibrium states are invariant under time-evolution.
